Equipping young Rwandans to achieve their potential in cycling and beyond.
The AMANI Spoke Academy aims to kickstart the future of African cycling by establishing a comprehensive education program that gives aspiring Rwandan pros the communication, technological, and conceptual skills they need for successful and sustainable professional careers.
For Rwandan cyclists, off-the-bike challenges can seem insurmountable. The structure of the current education system forces young boys and girls to choose between education and cycling such that in the long run, they end up with neither. The negative consequences of these missed opportunities reverberate across an already European-biased cycling world: when professional teams who are considering signing Rwandans ask teams who have done so before, the answer is loud and clear: “Don’t – they’re too much work!” As a result, promising young careers are cut short and the next big difference-makers in the African cycling movement never get their chance.
In less than three years, Rwanda will become the first African country to host the UCI Road World Championships. If the current state of Rwandan cycling persists, this incredible chance to showcase the potential of African cycling will pass without a single Rwandan making an impact at the event. To many people, this would be business as usual in professional cycling, but we don’t accept that same old status quo – we want to shake up the cycling establishment.
